This is a collection of image from my sketch books, most are drawn in graphite.
A collection of pastels drawings, graphite drawings and watercolor paintings; all done from live models.
Art history is a connective string held by all artists. It is shared cultural past that most can identify in an instant, be it in a familiar gesture, or a composition exploring the classical values. I utilize this pre existing connection to communicate change in our societal norms. Or the changes we have yet to make that I deem necessary for my vision of the future. The arts have historically been driven by a patriarchal structure. I have chosen to deal with the changing role of women in society. No longer is our only job to rising children and look pretty; no longer are we here only for the convenience of men. I am showing, through the familiar lense of classical art, that a woman's mind and strength, can rival or surpass that of any man. As well as my own compositions, I am taking these established masterworks and reclaiming them for our modern culture.
My choice of medium reflects that belief. When one thinks of the classical canon, most would think of oil paintings. This is why I choose watercolor, it has just as much historical weight, if not a longer history. Watercolor was considered to be not fit for finished work; that it was only a sketch medium. It was for the aristocracy to flitter away their time while on vacation, not a serious medium. Watercolor was never truly celebrated on the same level as oil paints till this century. To show that this unassuming delicate paint can carry the same weight and depth of range as any medium. Just like what I'm trying to convey about the women around us.
